Your education and knowledge is what sets you apart from the rest of the pack. If you can explain to your customers why your service is more valuable than the other guys, then you are on the right track. But the education of customers goes beyond what services you offer. Do your clients know how to maintain their floors? Do they know what chemicals to use? Do you offer products to help them maintain their floors them selves? Try to think of your relationship with your clients as a partnership. Both parties have the same goal: to keep the floors and other textiles as clean as possible.
So, what opportunities are you passing up to help educate your clientele? I would have to say the number one maintenance item neglected by homeowner and carpet cleaners alike it vacuuming. Are you pre-vacuuming? Even if you do it for free, you can still emphasize this necessary step by showing it as a line item on their invoice and putting “no charge” or something similar next to it. In this way you show them the value of your service. Hopefully they see how necessary vacuuming their carpet is because you placed such importance on it. Finally they feel as if they are getting something of value for free and that is something all consumers want no matter the industry.
Another way to educate your customers would be through the use of a spotter that stays with the home owner. Teach them how to use it, explain why getting spills off the carpet immediately is going to save them money. If you choose to leave it with them for free, use the “no charge” method. You could even decide to charge them for the product, which wouldn’t be a bad up sale. In either case the home owner will feel they have received “professional” training and a “professional” product. Think about that for a second, when is the last time you went to a service, lets say a car mechanic, and they educated you about how to do something that they could possibly charge you for? Weather or not you charge them they will still feel as if you’ve given them something of value. The key for this to work is to make sure your company name and contact info are both on the bottle, making sure they remember you and your company.
These are only a few methods you could use. You also could think about how to educate your customers when it come to protector, deodorizers, warranty programs, referrals and many more that we don’t have space to talk about. If you want some info or more ideas come in and we can explain in more detail how to take make use of customer education.
